Hello, my name is Aleksei. For over 6 years now, I have been studying the authentic shamanic traditions of indigenous tribes in Peru and Mexico. During this time, I have taken part in about 130 shamanic ceremonies. Most of them were Ayahuasca1 ceremonies in Peru, following the tradition of the Shipibo people. I combined these with shamanic diets2 involving other powerful plants of the Amazon. Additionally, I participated in peyote ceremonies3 in Mexico, within the tradition of the Huichol tribe, several mushroom ceremonies4 in the Mazatec tradition, and the indigenous steam bath Temazcal5. Besides these, I have also participated in some Siberian shamanic rituals with people who are striving to revive these traditions.
At some point, I realized it was time to share my knowledge and experiences with others, and that led me to write this article. I will explain what Ayahuasca is, how it works, what shamanism entails, who the shamans are, and why it is essential to attend Ayahuasca ceremonies only with authentic shamans. I will also share my personal encounters during shamanic journeys and how they have impacted my life. One of my motivations is to warn about the serious risks for those interested in shamanic ceremonies with Ayahuasca, Peyote, San Pedro, Iboga, and some other plants and mushrooms. Perhaps my knowledge will help someone understand this subject, navigate it, and find their own Path.
I am often asked why I do all this and why I have attended so many ceremonies, and this text will also answer that question 🙂.
In this article, I express my personal viewpoint. I would like to point out that this text has been translated from Russian, my native language, into English. Therefore, some terms and concepts may not be perfectly rendered in this translation, and some details and depth may have been lost. In the future, I plan to consult a professional translator to obtain a higher quality translation. A Brief Overview of Ayahuasca, Shamanic Diets, Peyote, Sacred Mushrooms, and Temazcal.
Ayahuasca1 (also known as ayawaska, aya, yagé, uni, vine of the dead, vine of souls, vine of the spirits, medicine, and by many other names) is a brew made from the vine Banisteriopsis caapi and either the leaves of Psychotria viridis (Chacruna) or Diplopterys cabrerana (Chaliponga). It is used in shamanic ceremonies by the Shipibo-Konibo, Asháninka, and other Amazonian tribes.
Shamanic Diet2 is a practice of working with medicinal plants used for learning about shamanic medicine, studying shamanism, developing awareness and sensitivity, as well as for treating serious illnesses and overall healing of the body and mind. It includes consuming herbal brews and infusions, and following an ascetic lifestyle with special dietary restrictions, solitude, and sexual abstinence.
Peyote3 (Lophophora williamsii, also known as peyotl, hikuri, peyotito, and by many other names) is a cactus used in shamanic ceremonies by some indigenous tribes in North America. It is considered a sacred plant by these indigenous peoples.
Sacred Mushrooms4 are several species of mushrooms capable of inducing a deep trance state in a person. In Mexico, some indigenous tribes have preserved authentic shamanic traditions that involve the use of these mushrooms.
Temazcal5 (also known as the house of steam) is an ancient shamanic ritual, a steam bath used by North American indigenous people. It is employed for the purification and healing of the body and spirit. A true Temazcal conducted by a shaman is a full-fledged ceremony where one can achieve a deep shamanic trance.
How I Came to This and What Shamanic Practices Have Given Me.
Let me start by explaining how I came to shamanism. I had two main motivations.
- Firstly, I have always been interested in learning and self-development since childhood. I wanted to understand myself, find the meaning of my existence, and make sense of the world around me. I had many questions, and I sought answers from various sources, reading a variety of scientific, psychological, and even esoteric literature, and trying different psychological, spiritual, and mystical practices I found in books and online. However, these pursuits did not provide the answers I was looking for. I would get engrossed in an idea or practice for a while, but it never led me to the desired outcome. So, I kept searching…
- Secondly, I had a number of psychological problems and life difficulties that greatly affected my life, and I was looking for ways to deal with them. I was striving to improve my life.
I first read about shamans in South America who conduct sacred Ayahuasca ceremonies in a book. I can no longer remember its name or what it was about, but the brief mention of tribal shamanism stayed with me. Over the next few years, I learned a little more about these traditions and even participated in some Siberian shamanic rituals. Naturally, I had a desire to attend a real Ayahuasca ceremony. However, for a long time, I was not ready for such a distant journey (I mean both the physical journey from my country to Peru and the shamanic expedition into my inner world).
After some time, I reached a serious crisis in my life. I had accumulated many problems that I couldn’t solve with the methods available to me. My psychological state was very depressive and bleak. I felt hopeless and didn’t know which direction to take. This challenging phase became the decisive push for me to seek out shamans and embark on a journey across the ocean to the distant country of Peru. I desperately wanted to change my life and believed that Ayahuasca and the shamans could help me. And they did.
After my first Ayahuasca ceremony, I felt that I had finally found what I was searching for. In my journeys to the shamans of Peru and Mexico, I received very deep, specific, and clear answers to all my questions. I experienced firsthand the things that intrigued me the most. I didn’t just read about them or hear about them from someone else—I saw everything myself. I understood the true causes of my life crisis, my problems, and my emotional turmoil. I learned why my life had unfolded the way it did and how it could be fixed.
With the help of the shamans, I did a lot of inner work on myself. As a result, I achieved a much more conscious, clear, and emotionally stable state, and I learned how to maintain and sustain it in my daily life. Several serious psychological issues that I couldn’t resolve with other, more traditional methods (such as psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, regressive hypnosis, and others) were finally resolved. My physical health improved, and I learned how to strengthen and maintain it. My relationships with people got better, and my social circle changed and expanded significantly. I clearly defined my life goals and priorities. I realized what I truly wanted, I felt my real desires—not the ones imposed by others or society at large. I discovered what was genuinely important and valuable in my life and what held no significance at all. I chose new life goals and a new Path for myself.
I became a happier and freer person, learning to enjoy life more, to savor its moments, its beauty, to value my loved ones and my time. The shamanic ceremonies taught me to see the world and people differently, to think more clearly, and opened my eyes to many aspects of life. I started traveling more and even moved to another country. I realized that the country where I was born and spent most of my life was no longer suitable for peaceful and free living. And the process of change continues to this day. With each new journey to the shamans, something new opens up for me. I am constantly amazed at the power of authentic shamanic ceremonies. They help me find answers to new questions and cope with the new challenges and trials that inevitably arise in life.
I also want to mention that meeting and connecting with people who also visit the shamans has become important and valuable to me. I met many interesting people there. Each of them showed me something and taught me something, for which I am grateful. I particularly enjoy the conversations after the joint ceremonies; these exchanges often become genuinely heartfelt, sincere, and deep. I especially want to mention and thank my close friend Sasha, with whom I’ve gone through a lot, and who has taught me so much—and thank the people who helped me move to another country (I met them there too).
Overall, my worldview has changed significantly during this time. My journeys to the shamans have been invaluable experiences, fantastically beautiful and life-changing events. And the more ceremonies I attend, the more I realize that I want to continue studying this further.
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is an ancient practice of entering special trance states of consciousness, in which a person can see and understand much more than in everyday life. It allows one to perceive the world as it truly is and use the power of consciousness to influence one’s own life, the lives of others, and the surrounding world. Shamanism can be described as a system of practical knowledge about the nature of our consciousness, human nature and society, the structure of our world, and the universe as a whole. Additionally, it is the ability to establish a special connection with the living nature, pure natural spirits, and one’s Ancestors.
Authentic tribal shamanism has always had a practical orientation; it helped solve complex tasks and problems, taught reasonableness and awareness, improved people’s lives, and gave them the ability to see reality as it truly is. Its emergence and development were driven by the natural human needs to understand oneself and the world and to address various practical issues:
- to survive successfully and reproduce,
- to have a healthy body and live long,
- to heal illness and relieve pain,
- to conduct a successful hunt and grow a good harvest,
- to protect oneself, one’s loved ones, and one’s property,
- to find what is lost,
- to improve relationships between people and resolve conflicts.
Ancient shamanic traditions, those that have been passed down unbroken and have reached us in their pure original form, are called authentic. They have been formed since deep antiquity by many generations of people. An immense volume of human knowledge and experience was accumulated—what people discovered and understood over countless human lives and passed down from generation to generation for many thousands of years, from teachers to students.
Shamanism existed among many peoples of the Earth. Unfortunately, by now, most peoples have already forgotten their shamanic traditions, losing these invaluable insights along the way. What is commonly referred to as «shamanism» in our world often bears little relation to true authentic shamanism. More often than not, it is merely an imitation, lacking real power. But in some regions of our planet, the real thing has survived. And I am very glad that I have had the chance to encounter it.
What I will describe in this article mainly concerns Amazonian shamanism and Ayahuasca ceremonies, as I have come to know these traditions quite closely and deeply. In Mexican shamanism, the situation is similar, but with its significant differences. I have not studied the shamanic traditions of other regions, such as Siberian shamanism, in depth.
The Work of Shamans and Guides. On the Sad Situation with Ayahuasca Shamanic Ceremonies, Charlatans, and Brujos.
I feel a certain responsibility when I talk to people about shamanism. Therefore, before I move on to a detailed description of my personal experiences in shamanic ceremonies, I will discuss the roles of Shamans and Guides. I will try to explain the key differences in the use of power plants in authentic shamanism versus their use in shamanic mimicry, psychedelia, and self-experiments. I am absolutely convinced that it is dangerous to use such plants without a true shaman. People are often unaware of this danger and approach it extremely carelessly. They have no idea how serious it is and what they are coming into contact with.
In recent years, Ayahuasca has become increasingly popular. A large number of people are interested in the ceremonies, and it has become a trendy form of psychedelic tourism. Thousands of people in various countries are undertaking to conduct «shamanic ceremonies,» and the internet is brimming with offers and websites for shamanic healing centers. However, the tragedy of this situation is that only a true shaman can conduct a safe and complete shamanic ceremony. Out of the thousands of people organizing «ceremonies» with plants and mushrooms, only a handful have undergone comprehensive, multi-year training and can perform this work at a professional level. Unfortunately, people who claim the title of shaman are, in most cases, untrained, not genuine shamans, and lack the knowledge and extensive experience necessary for this complex work.
Moreover, authentic shamanism is always inherently connected to specific places. Ayahuasca is tied to the land where it grows, to the spirits of the local jungles, and only in its natural environment does it have true power. It cannot simply be taken and exported from the Amazon to another region. However, you can find offers to participate in ceremonies and retreats almost anywhere—Ayahuasca in the USA, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Turkey, and even Bali. The offer to attend a ceremony in any of these countries is a clear and unmistakable sign that these ceremonies will not be genuine, nor will the «shamans» conducting them be authentic. True shamans do not travel the world offering these experiences to everyone; this is done by entirely different people with motives far removed from shamanism.
I was personally very fortunate with both the shamans and the guides into the world of shamanism. But from the beginning, I approached this matter with utmost seriousness, specifically seeking out the genuine, people with pure and noble intentions. It took me quite some time, but I eventually found what I was looking for.
Who is a Shaman (Curandero), and What is Their Role in a Shamanic Ceremony?
A shaman is a professional healer (in Peru, shamans are called curanderos), a person who has mastered the ancient shamanic art, possesses deep knowledge of shamanic medicine, and knows how to heal people and conduct full-fledged shamanic ceremonies. Shamans know how to work with medicinal plants, maintain a deep connection with Nature, and can communicate and work with its spirits (I will write more about them later). It is crucial to understand that shamanic work is not about believing in some supernatural forces but rather about practice—real and tangible immersion into one’s inner world and interaction with the intelligent energy of the surrounding world, an opportunity to receive knowledge, help, and support from it. For me, a true shaman is one whose work results are visible and palpable.
Conducting a ceremony is a very complex and responsible task. It requires strong sensitivity, concentration, dedication, and special skills that are developed over years and decades through specific practices, shamanic diets, and various trials. Shamans know how to properly and safely open the space of the ceremony, protect this space and each participant within it, correctly guide people into a state of shamanic trance, show them the path in this space and guide them along it, perform deep healing work, and, at the end of the ceremony, return people to the familiar world. A curandero sees and deeply feels each participant at all times, guiding and assisting them. All participants are in a shared field and under the shaman’s protection.
A true shamanic ceremony is a complex and ancient technology, not merely the use of psychoactive properties of plants for psychedelic trips, as many mistakenly believe.
Shamans know how to help people in various life situations, they see the life story of each person and their Ancestry, deeply understanding the cause-and-effect relationships in people’s lives. They see and know what needs to be healed and corrected so that a person can better understand and feel themselves and how to show them a better path in life. Through performing beautiful shamanic songs (icaros), shamans work with people, opening their consciousness and accompanying them in a state of shamanic trance (at the end of the article, I will leave a link to a Telegram channel where I will post some recordings). Curanderos transmit a pure intention to help people so that all negativity, pain, and sadness leave, and deep physical and emotional healing occurs.
It is important to understand that the shaman’s work is of primary importance, not the consumption of sacred plants or mushrooms. In Amazonian shamanism, the Ayahuasca brew is used to immerse ceremony participants into a trance, but the healing work with people is done by the shaman. If we look deeper into the process, it becomes clear that the plants themselves also perform significant work, but their power is unlocked by the shaman. Plants (like people and other living beings) have both a body and a spirit. The Ayahuasca brew can be considered the body of the plants, their physical embodiment, made from vines and leaves. However, the spirits of Ayahuasca and Chacruna (both of these plants are part of the brew) must be properly and respectfully summoned and invited to the ceremony, so they come and work with the people. Simply drinking the brew without the spiritual component and without the shaman’s work will not work correctly; it will be an uncontrolled and dangerous journey through the unconscious. Moreover, besides Ayahuasca and Chacruna, the curandero knows and uses many other plants and calls upon various spirits who also participate in the ceremony.
An excerpt from a recording of one of my Ayahuasca ceremonies:
The shaman sat next to me and began to sing. And within him, I felt Life; he sang sincerely and with love. I sensed the ancient power and deep wisdom beyond words of the Shaman and his people. I did not understand the words, but I felt and knew that the Shaman was singing to me about life, about healing, about well-being, about the connection of all living things on Earth. I felt his sincere desire and intention to help me, to heal me. I saw him drawing some heavy energy out of me; it left, and I was filled with light, joy, and calm. What troubled me, what made me ill, departed—the madness of the world in which I was born and grew accustomed to living left. I remembered who I really am, recalled my true nature, and learned again how to live, but to live differently.
A Warning About Danger. On Psychedelia, Charlatans, and Brujos. A Few Words About Psychedelic Therapy.
Only a well-trained shaman can conduct a true and, most importantly, beneficial and safe Ayahuasca ceremony (as well as with Peyote and several other plants and mushrooms). The use of power plants is a serious intervention into a person’s inner world, their psychological processes, their life Path, and their destiny.
But unfortunately, most people who wish to undergo ceremonies do not reach real shamans and never will. There is an incredible amount of false information and incompetent people around this topic, many charlatans and imitators, a lot of absolutely empty nonsense. And on the surface, all this activity can look quite exotic, beautiful, and harmless (much of it is built on creating a superficial impression)—retreats in many countries of the world, indigenous «shamans,» and «shamanic» centers. But if you look deeper—most of the time, it has no real healing power, it confuses people and diverts them from the best Path, and in some cases, leads to the most unfortunate outcomes.
What is the reason behind this? There are several causes, but I will mention two for now:
- Firstly, the visible aspects of shamanic practices (the use of mushrooms and plants, singing shamanic songs, the use of shamanic attributes and clothing, drumming, etc.) are very easy to replicate and imitate, creating the illusion of knowledge. However, in shamanism, what matters is not the external form but the inner essence of the shamanic work. Much of it is invisible to the external observer because it takes place in the spiritual world, on a subtle energetic level. People who do not see or understand this work, and have no reference for what it looks like, can be easily impressed and misled. This is something that needs to be felt, seen, and understood, but it cannot be conveyed in words. Most seekers have no understanding of what a true shaman is and what their work really looks like. They simply have nowhere to gain this understanding.
- Secondly, these plants and mushrooms, when consumed, greatly alter the state of consciousness. If a person drinks Ayahuasca, eats Peyote or San Pedro cactus, or consumes psilocybin mushrooms, it is very likely that they will have an intense mystical and psychedelic experience. Bright visions may arise, unusual sensations may occur, and the person might see or realize something that leaves a profound impression on them. This is how many people get drawn into psychedelia, that is, the consumption of plant-based and synthetic psychedelics. Some do it for entertainment, others under the guise of shamanic ceremonies. But this has nothing to do with authentic shamanism.
Shamans do not spend years learning to heal people and conduct ceremonies for nothing. This is a responsible job that requires serious and long-term preparation. Participation in ceremonies with charlatans, psychedelia, and self-experiments often leads to negative consequences. Yes, it can become a positive and vivid experience from which some conclusions can be drawn. But often, people, overwhelmed by the psychedelic trip, fall into illusions, make false conclusions, and are unable to track the real consequences, especially the long-term ones. In more negative scenarios, it can result in a highly traumatic experience and disrupt one’s life Path (much depends on the psychological state, dosage, environment, and other factors). Without a shaman, the process of trance is unmanageable, and in this state, it is easy to disrupt the normal flow of one’s internal psychological processes. Serious side effects are possible, especially with prolonged involvement: problems with physical health, panic attacks, psychological disorders, and the disruption of a normal lifestyle. In extreme cases, it can lead to the end of a person’s life, resulting from suicide or an accident. I know quite a few such stories.
Moreover, in my observations, people who use psychedelics tend to disconnect from reality and immerse themselves in an illusory world that may seem absolutely real to them. For example, a person might genuinely start believing that they are a shaman and a conduit for the spirit of Ayahuasca, learning from angels, fighting demons, and helping other people. However, in reality, these are just fantasies happening only in their imagination. True ceremonies, on the other hand, bring their participants back to reality and help them learn more about this world, if they want and are ready for it. People come to ceremonies to see themselves, others, and the world as they truly are, with all their dark and unappealing sides…
Overall, people come to shamanism with very different motivations, which are not always pure. Some get involved simply to make money from the «trendy» topic. Of course, it is entirely natural to receive compensation for your work if you know how to do it. But charlatans just mislead people, taking advantage of their lack of discernment and exposing them to danger. However, this does not always happen intentionally and consciously. There are people who are genuinely interested in shamanism, want to learn and help others, but do not find authentic masters and end up with charlatans, eventually becoming charlatans themselves. Perhaps my article will help such people find a better Path.
Over time, more and more people call themselves shamans, even though they have never seen real shamans. These people simply lack the necessary skills and experience to work with plants to make the process safe, let alone achieve the real healing effect that can be experienced in a true ceremony. Additionally, many people who call themselves shamans, healers, guides, or by other names can appear as bright, kind, knowledgeable, and sincere people, pleasant to talk to, capable of attracting others and exuding confidence. But this says nothing about their actual level of knowledge and abilities. Often, they simply use rather primitive manipulations.
Another danger on the path of seekers of shamanic experience is brujos, who may use Ayahuasca and other plants not for healing but to harm people, deceive them, manipulate them for their own interests, and drain their life force and resources. Sometimes this is called «black magic,» and it is quite insidious and dangerous. The existence of this magic can be explained by the ability to influence the mental processes in people’s consciousness. Both shamans and brujos possess knowledge of how to do this. But how it will be used depends on the individual. Healing shamans use this knowledge to help and heal, to free from pain, fears, and anxieties. Brujos use it for their dark purposes. I know several stories where contact with brujos and the subsequent chain of grim events simply ruined a person’s life. In some well-known «shamanic» centers in Peru, it is brujos who work, and people unknowingly fall into their hands.
It becomes challenging to distinguish who is a shaman, who is just a charlatan, and who is a brujo without special knowledge and proper guidance. I have observed people who, even in ceremonies with genuine shamans, were very frightened (I have also gone through many terrifying experiences), thinking that the shaman wanted to harm them, take something from them, or negatively influence them. But people were merely confronting what was inside them—their fears and anxieties, their inner content—not what was really happening. Conversely, there are cases where people have been going to charlatans for a long time, sincerely believing that they are helping them. They thus fall into a trap that is difficult to escape from later. There are also some popular and well-known «shamans» who are actually brujos. Often, these are people skilled at exerting strong influence over others, possessing a developed gift of suggestion, and using this gift for personal gain, power, or various criminal activities.
I repeat—people who decide to try Ayahuasca (or other powerful plants) often do not realize how serious it can impact their lives. I have spoken with several hundred people on this topic and concluded that most are extremely undiscerning. In my opinion, it is better not to participate in such practices at all than to attend charlatan ceremonies. But everyone chooses their own Path and bears responsibility for their own life.
I also decided to write a few words about modern psychedelic therapy. I have great respect for researchers seeking new methods of treatment and ways to help people. But these studies have only been conducted for a few decades; essentially, they are still in their infancy. In contrast, authentic shamanism encompasses many thousands of years of human experience and the development of special practices. I know that these are entirely incomparable things. People conducting such therapies do not know how to manage a person’s state, do not see what is happening with the consciousness in altered states, and do not possess the techniques of working with plants, cleansing, and healing. It may have some benefits, but the long-term changes in the psyche and the overall impact on people’s lives are unpredictable. In studying such questions, our science and medicine are still just at the very beginning of their journey…
On Ceremony Organizers and Guides into the World of Shamanism.
In journeys to shamans, besides the shamans themselves, guides and organizers play a significant role. Just like with shamans, there are only a few true professional guides and researchers who have dedicated many years to studying the tradition, who can properly organize shamanic ceremonies (following all the rules and principles accepted in shamanic tradition) and genuinely help people. It’s important to write about them in my story as well.
I consider the work of guides (as well as that of shamans) very significant, even though at first glance it may seem simple. One of the main aspects of their work (when dealing with shamans from indigenous tribes) is to properly facilitate the meeting between the shamans and the people who have come to them. Indigenous shamans were born in a different world, much simpler than ours. They have formed in an entirely different environment than we, people from modern civilization. And when working with us, shamans gradually weaken and lose their shamanic power. Therefore, it’s important to create the right conditions and a protected space for shamanic work, so that the shamans can work to their full potential and maintain their abilities longer, and the participants of the ceremonies can gain valuable experiences and solve their issues and problems. This requires great effort.
Another important aspect is the shamanic and psychological work with people before, during, and after ceremonies. Shamanism is, first and foremost, about helping and healing, and people come to ceremonies with their problems, pain, illnesses, and inner burdens. It is essential that each person receives assistance and support. It is not enough to merely organize accommodations, meals, and the ceremonies themselves. Genuine help requires involvement in the internal processes of people, their questions, problems, and illnesses. A single powerful ceremony, or even more so a cycle of ceremonies, can change a person’s worldview and their perception of life. Properly guiding people through this transformation is a special task and a great responsibility.
Shamanic ceremonies develop sensitivity to people, the ability to see and feel deeply. They provide knowledge on how to truly help people overcome their problems. Guides actively apply these skills and knowledge in their work. They participate in ceremonies alongside the participants, keep an eye on everyone, and assist the shamans. Outside the ceremonies, they provide psychological support through communication. Words, when right and said at the right time, have great power. They can support and help a person in their life situation and assist in making important decisions.
Furthermore, what occurs in a shamanic trance is often interpreted by people through the lens of their past experiences and worldview, their thoughts and ideas, hopes and fantasies. This often leads to erroneous conclusions. An experienced guide, with whom one can speak in a shared language, helps to understand what happened during the ceremony, helps to correctly interpret the experience, and apply it in life. Only through practice comes the ability to discern what you truly see in a ceremony and where it comes from, what is reality, and what is merely a thought, desire, imagination, or incorrect interpretation. In addition to communication, outings in nature, to beautiful natural places, greatly aid the process of inner transformation. Deep work continues there, for nature, especially after a powerful shamanic experience, can show us much and fill us with its strength.
It should also be understood that in the current situation, there is almost no chance of finding a truly authentic shaman on your own. And shamans, first and foremost, are ordinary people, each with their own character and traits, light and dark sides. Like any other person, a shaman can become ill or experience life tragedies. For various reasons, even an experienced and strong shaman in the past may reduce the quality of their work or even completely lose their shamanic power. An experienced guide knows and senses which shamans can conduct shamanic ceremonies and perform quality work.
As I mentioned earlier, I was incredibly fortunate with my guides into the world of shamanism. These people have immense experience working with shamans and healing plants and are genuinely committed to preserving shamanism and helping people. They protect and support the remaining shamans and their families. They showed me shamanism, helped me greatly, taught me much, became my friends, and I am very grateful to them for all of this.
I understand that my story can be perceived as an advertisement for «real shamans and guides» and a deliberate labeling of many others in this field as incompetent. But unfortunately, the situation is truly grim. Of course, I would very much like there to be more real shamans, people who work honestly and purely. But it is what it is. There are few, and they are becoming fewer. Whether to trust my words or not—I leave that to the reader’s choice. Perhaps my words will protect someone from trouble or help them be more discerning. If so, then I have not spoken about all this in vain.
What Happens in Real Ceremonies with Ayahuasca, Peyote, and Mushrooms? The Practical Value of This Experience.
Above all, a true shamanic ceremony with power plants is a journey into your inner world, a meeting with yourself and your inner content, your good and bad deeds, a very deep understanding of yourself, your personal history, your goals and desires, strengths and weaknesses.
Ayahuasca shows a person, with utmost honesty and openness, who they really are, revealing the truth about them, all their dark and light sides. In essence, within each of us lies a whole Universe, and by truly looking deeply within, one can discover much that is new. Moreover, people often hide what is within them, even from themselves…
I can also describe ceremonies as immersions into the spiritual and energetic reality of our world, usually hidden from us but accessible in a state of deep meditation or shamanic trance. As someone who works in IT in everyday life, I have often compared shamanic practices to the internet. I see it as a kind of «biological internet,» a special connection with all living things. It’s an amazing thing when, in a ceremony, a space opens up where, much like Google, you can pose any query and receive a detailed response. In this state, a vast amount of information becomes available—about oneself and one’s family, about other people, about nature and the world, human history, and the structure of the universe. But it is important to learn to navigate this flow of information, ask the right questions, and correctly interpret the answers. This is a skill that comes with practice. And there are answers whose meanings become clear only years later…
Overall, the range of states, sensations, emotions, and what one can see, hear, experience, and learn in authentic shamanic ceremonies is incredibly diverse. What this becomes for a person, what useful and valuable insights they take from the experience, depends on the person themselves—their intentions and questions, personality and character, worldview, psychological traits and thinking, life experience, and readiness for such a journey. Ceremonies reveal to a person what is truly important for them to know. Each new shamanic journey reveals something new and can be completely different from all previous ones. Moreover, the same things can be seen from many different perspectives, even within a single ceremony, at different stages of the shamanic trance.
- The states can be pure and incredibly beautiful, where you deeply feel yourself and understand your life, its meaning, and significance, clearly comprehend the events unfolding around you and the world, feel unity with the entire world, touch true power and wisdom, happiness and love, and feel complete freedom. It can be called awakening and recalling your true nature when Ayahuasca completely disassembles and reassembles you, leads you on a journey through the labyrinths of the subconscious and the deep layers of memory, guiding you to the light and revealing the infinity of Being.
- But there can also be very harsh states, physically taxing with psychological and informational overloads, especially when working with particularly heavy life experiences. Of course, in a true shamanic ceremony, the shaman sees and controls everything, manages the process, and adjusts the intensity of the participants’ experiences, but nonetheless, it can be very challenging to go through. I remember that after my second Ayahuasca ceremony, I wanted to pack my things, buy a return ticket, leave Peru, and never come back. That ceremony terrified me; I faced my fears and experienced death. But I overcame the urge to run away and decided to continue on this path, and I am very glad I did, as it changed my life for the better, and I found what I had been seeking for so long.
I thought long about how to describe my personal experiences of the ceremonies and my reflections, how to structure it all. I wrote several stories about what I saw and understood through my personal experiences and by observing the many different people with whom I shared shamanic ceremonies with Ayahuasca, Peyote, and sacred mushrooms. I will start with simpler topics and gradually move on to more global ones.
Important: I mostly describe my personal experiences and my shamanic visions. Each person’s experience in a ceremony is unique and unrepeatable, and you may see something of your own, something entirely different. I describe my personal moments that seemed particularly significant to me, and this is just a part—I have not yet written about many things.
Healing the Physical Body and Working with Addictions. A Little About Medicinal Plants.
The primary goal of authentic shamanism is the physical and spiritual healing of the person. Traditional indigenous medicine is very effective and provides the opportunity to cure many diseases and understand their true causes.
I saw how this works, and I was impressed by the abilities of the shamans. During ceremonies, I closely observed how various diseases originate and develop within the human body. Each has its own causes and roots. Usually, these are complex and difficult events in a person’s life, various negative experiences, psychological issues, negative emotions, and suppressed feelings that eventually turn into illnesses. Sometimes diseases are hereditary, becoming a consequence of the tragedies and pain experienced by our ancestors. Naturally, a person’s lifestyle, poor diet, and various harmful habits and addictions often lead to illnesses.
Shamans can keenly sense and see diseases and their causes. In ceremonies, they use different healing techniques associated with cleansing the soul and body, with most of the work conducted on a spiritual level. They seem to draw the illness out of the body, halt self-destructive processes, and initiate healing and recovery processes. In some cases, they work physically, such as setting organs, bones, and joints. Meanwhile, Ayahuasca itself deeply cleanses a person, including on a physical level, which is sometimes accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea (as natural cleansing mechanisms). But at the same time, true healing is always serious work on oneself. It is important to delve deeply into one’s problems to see their real causes and roots; it is essential to correct and rethink something in one’s life.
In my case, I didn’t have any severe illnesses. However, I did have a few health problems that greatly concerned me. During the ceremonies, I clearly saw the causes of these issues and worked seriously on them. The shamans treated me and prepared medicinal plants for me, which I took. As a result of this treatment, some of my problems went away, and I felt improvement in others. But the most significant thing the ceremonies showed me was how much my body’s health depends on myself, how much it is my responsibility. They showed me what destroys my body and negatively affects it, as well as what strengthens and makes it more resilient. I received many recommendations on what I could change in my lifestyle, diet, physical activity, environment, and even thoughts and feelings to be healthier, feel better, and live longer. However, one of my serious mistakes was that later, in everyday life, I often did not follow these recommendations and forgot about them. Only over time did I truly appreciate the value of many of them…
In addition to Ayahuasca ceremonies, an important part of traditional Amazonian medicine is the use of many other healing plants (of which there are thousands of species in Peru!). I’ve tried some of them, and I especially enjoy going through shamanic diets with these plants. One of my two favorites is Planta de la Vida (which translates from Spanish as the Plant of Life). It fills me with a special gentle life energy, calms me, greatly aids in ceremonies, and makes me more open to people and the world.
Another plant I really like is Chiric Sanango (Brunfelsia grandiflora, known as Mukapari in the Shipibo language). This is a very powerful healing plant that treats the nervous system and joints, reduces inflammation, and deeply heals the body. During the diet, these plants reveal much on a spiritual level, tune you into a different perception, and help you see and feel more. They help you clearly sense how the external world influences the internal state and how the internal state affects the external world and the events that happen within it.
However, I strongly discourage using the plants I mention on your own. Each of them has its own character, rules of engagement, and specific applications. It’s very important to know how to work with them correctly; otherwise, you can seriously harm yourself. A vivid example that everyone knows is Tobacco. In many indigenous tribes, it is considered one of the most sacred plants. Tobacco (specifically one of its types called Mapacho in Peru) has special qualities that shamans use in their work. But if used improperly, it has a destructive effect, enslaves the person, causes strong addiction, and causes enormous harm to health. I felt this well when I started smoking tobacco—it required serious effort to stop.
On a related note, shamanic practices can also help treat addictions. Theoretically, everyone knows about the harm of drug use, alcohol abuse, and the harm of sugar, etc. But people often underestimate the negative impact of various dependencies on their lives and do not recognize their harmful habits (until they face serious consequences). Ceremonies show them very clearly, demonstrating exactly how they destroy a person, drain their energy, health, and time, and what they can lead to in the future. They reveal the reasons why these dependencies arose. In a shamanic trance, it is possible to rid oneself of many addictions and correct their negative consequences. However, the outcome of this work always depends on the person and their desire. Ayahuasca and the shaman will show the best path and help with healing, but the choice always remains with the person: to continue the process of self-destruction or to work on oneself and choose a better life.
Speaking generally about the results of shamanic healing work—I have observed improvement in many people’s conditions. In some cases, this was confirmed by medical examinations. One particularly noticeable change after a cycle of ceremonies is in the eyes—the gaze becomes clear and bright. However, it must be said that shamanism is not a cure-all for every illness. Much depends on the individual and their desire to heal, their lifestyle, the severity and progression of the disease, and whether the person is willing to undertake serious work on themselves. Fundamentally, not everything can be healed, as, ultimately, the human body is mortal. For example, there is practically no chance of curing severe cancer in its late stages. In such situations, it may be possible only to extend life for a while, alleviate the condition, calm and relax the person, make the transition to the other world easier, and make this transition bright for them.
In some cases, modern medicine in our civilization works faster and more effectively. Therefore, in matters of health, I see the combination of ancient shamanism and modern medicine as a good and proper approach.
Shamanic Psychotherapy and Healing of the Psyche. The Influence of Past Experiences on a Person’s Life and Revisiting Those Experiences.
I believe that in terms of psychological help and improving mental well-being, shamanic ceremonies are exceptionally effective. Just as with physical ailments, you can deeply look into the essence of existing psychological problems, understand their true causes, and correct them. It is possible to seriously reassess your life experiences, heal psychological traumas, cure depression, remove various fears and anxieties, correct distorted perceptions of yourself and the world around you, and eliminate muscle tension and tightness in the body. You can truly understand yourself, your feelings, emotions, and thoughts. You can deal with what troubles you and see effective ways to solve your problems.
Let me try to describe how this happens. From a psychological point of view, people are shaped by their life experiences. A person is built in such a way that from the moment they enter this world, their body, brain, and psyche adapt to it, learning to survive in it. This process is especially intense during childhood when a young person explores the world around them and learns the rules of the game. A child absorbs the atmosphere around them, forming thought and behavior patterns, laying the foundation of their personality. In childhood, a person develops an understanding of who they are and the world around them, and this knowledge guides them further in life. It largely determines their destiny.
It is crucial for a child to receive love from both parents and grow up in an atmosphere of love, respect, care, and safety. It is important that parents do not suppress the child or impose their worldview but help them adapt to life and help reveal in them what they brought into this world. If a child does not receive love or receives insufficient love, grows up in an aggressive and negative atmosphere, feels pressure from others, is subjected to mental and physical abuse, and accumulates various psychological traumas, this leads to serious problems later in life, directly affecting its quality and longevity.
Of course, the influence of past experiences is not limited to childhood. The process of learning and adaptation continues throughout life. At any moment, events can occur that become traumatic and leave a lasting mark. However, many psychological issues that hinder people from living confidently, enjoying life, and feeling good and calm stem from childhood. Often, these are harder to correct and often accompany a person throughout their life. Those who were deeply traumatized in childhood often do not even realize the problems and live their entire lives in very bleak states of mind, harboring resentment toward the world and constantly battling it.
As I wrote in the beginning, one of my motivations was the desire to find a tool that would help me deal with my internal problems that were hindering my life. Shamanic ceremonies became the best of everything I had tried. I have not encountered anything more powerful. An analogy even came to mind: psychology, psychoanalysis, and various branches of psychotherapy are like slowly digging through layers of one’s psyche and past experiences with a small shovel. Sometimes it works and helps, but rather slowly. A shamanic ceremony with Ayahuasca or Peyote, however, is like a big excavator showing up, allowing us to rapidly and intensely process vast amounts of our inner content. Especially when we have a serious intention for such work and truly want to resolve our issues.
This helped me a lot. I won’t delve deeply into my personal story or describe specific events. I will keep it as brief and general as possible, just to show how it worked in my case. I have good parents, and they gave me everything they could under the conditions they lived in, and I am sincerely grateful to them for that. However, my childhood and youth were not easy; I grew up and formed in a modest family in the Russian provinces, in a rather aggressive atmosphere. As a result, I developed many fears, anxieties, doubts, lack of self-confidence, depressive states, and mood swings. The biggest problem for me was that I had many difficulties in relationships with other people. Often, interacting with people, especially strangers, caused me anxiety and tension. This troubled me greatly, and I wanted to change it.
Through shamanic ceremonies, I largely resolved these issues. I became much more comfortable communicating and meeting people. I became more open and sincere in my interactions; the inner aggression disappeared. At times, I began to clearly feel and understand people, what drives them, their inner world, and their motivations. However, I still tend to enjoy solitude and have a certain level of reservation; I do not like too much communication. But now it doesn’t bother me; I feel much more confident and calm than in my «previous life» before discovering shamanism. My psychological state has improved.
This effect became possible because shamans have incredibly deep knowledge of the human psyche and can heal it at a profound level. In shamanic trance, psychological defenses are removed, and complete memory is revealed, bringing back long-forgotten events and the true story of one’s life. I saw very clearly the cause-and-effect relationships of my past experiences and the subsequent events of my life, my inner state, and my perception of myself, the people around me, and the world. I learned how my personality developed from the moment I entered this world and how I became who I am.
I revisited various events in my personal history and relived them. These were events from both my adult life and my earliest childhood, even from the prenatal period. Interestingly, even at this earliest stage of life, a person is capable of feeling what is happening around them, sensing their mother’s fears and anxieties, and this too influences their future life. In ceremonies, immersion into the past is often accompanied by an external perspective, from the position of a neutral observer, where all the causes and effects, the motivations of the participants, and the influence of the past on the future become clear. This leads to a reevaluation and correction of what was disrupted and a release from the burden of the past. This work is valuable because revisiting the past can greatly improve one’s present and future. Additionally, ceremonies teach how to unlock inner strength and, regardless of external circumstances, remain in a state of calm and balance.
In concluding this account, I want to share two conclusions. First, no matter how complex and difficult life experience is, a person has the power to reevaluate it, correct the negative consequences, and choose a better path for themselves. Our consciousness and intention possess tremendous power that we can harness. The challenge lies in finding effective tools and the amount of work required. Second, negative life experiences can be viewed as a resource that makes us wiser and stronger, teaches us to overcome obstacles, and, in a broader perspective, contributes to the development and evolution of both the individual and humanity. At least in my personal story, this is true 100%. The desire to overcome what was hindering me became the impetus for my growth and progress.
Encountering and Overcoming Fears. The Fear of Death.
The scariest thing I faced in my shamanic journeys were my fears. In everyday life, fears operate in the background, becoming more noticeable when a person feels the approach of the object of their fear and less noticeable when it is distant. Ayahuasca, especially during the cleansing stage of the ceremony, can significantly amplify fears and completely immerse one in them. In some cases, intense fear and panic can overwhelm a person’s entire consciousness at such moments.
Working with fears is an important part of shamanic work. There are many different fears: of death, illness, pain, loss of loved ones, poverty, madness, war, natural disasters, flying, heights, the unknown, and many, many others. Fears are natural and beneficial; they help living beings survive and avoid danger. Everyone has them. However, some of our fears can severely poison existence, negatively affect the quality of life, and hinder a person’s development and ability to live a full life, like the fears I wrote about in the previous story.
In shamanic ceremonies, all fears become visible and tangible; one immerses in them and lives through them. But this does not happen to frighten the person or make them run away. In this state, when one clearly sees what is within, when fear is distinctly felt, it is possible to understand it well and see its causes. After all, every fear has its source and its history of origin. These can be psychological traumas and negative experiences. They can be ancient fears, such as the fear of death—the fundamental and primary human fear that has helped people survive throughout human history. Seeing and knowing the cause, clearly understanding one’s fear, a person can learn to overcome it, to free themselves from it, or significantly reduce its intensity.
When strong fears came to me during ceremonies, I wanted to run away from them, find a way to stop it all, especially at the beginning of my journey when I had no understanding of how it worked. There were even moments when I would step outside the ceremonial space, sit there surrounded by flashlights, stare into the light to maintain contact with this reality, start a stopwatch on my phone to watch the numbers, and desperately wish for the ordeal to end. But relief would come when I began to work with it, realizing what was happening to me and why I was seeing it. As my guides often said, it is important to relax and calm down, allow it to happen, and look closely to see what it really is. In this state, many insights came to me, including understanding who I really am, a profound reevaluation of my relationship with myself, others, and the world. After such an extraordinary experience, life became calmer and more relieved. I am convinced that these encounters with my fears made me psychologically stronger and braver and taught me how to overcome them.
A particularly significant event for me was experiencing death and the fear of death. This led to a very vivid and realistic awareness of my mortality and acceptance of it. I understood death as a part of the life process because I clearly felt that after the death of the physical body, consciousness continues to live. But I will write more about «Life After Death» in a separate story closer to the end of the article.
As I have already written, it is very important to have such experiences with a true curandero who makes the journey safe and fully controls the process. This is a very delicate and responsible task. The support and help of the shaman, the constant telepathic contact with them during the ceremony, are invaluable at such moments. In an uncontrolled shamanic trance, a person can encounter such a volume of their fears and internal negative energy that it can simply damage their psyche. This sometimes happens at charlatan «ceremonies.»
Diving into Ancestral Memory. The Influence of History on Human Lives. About War.
As I have already mentioned, in Ayahuasca and other plant ceremonies, memory is revealed, allowing a person to recall long-forgotten events and their true life story. However, beyond personal memory, there are much deeper levels that open in a shamanic trance.
This is ancestral memory, the memory of our Ancestors. I can describe it as a vast database containing the history of every person’s life, every lineage, every nation, and the entire history of humanity. The most amazing thing is that we carry this memory within us and can access it in particular states of consciousness. I vividly saw the life stories of different people, how they lived in different times, what they felt, thought, and experienced, what they aspired to, and the paths they followed. I even lived through their experiences, which gave me profound understanding and developed my empathy.
Delving into the deep layers of memory has significant practical value because the life experiences, choices and actions, desires and dreams, thoughts and words of our ancestors continue to live in us and in our ancestral, genetic memory. We accumulate the experiences of previous generations within ourselves, and their experiences largely determine our life path and destiny. Many of our behavioral strategies come from our distant ancestors, passed down from generation to generation (when we replicate the behaviors of our parents, our parents replicate the behaviors of their parents, and so on). I discovered profound cause-and-effect connections between events in my life and the lives of my ancestors, and it was astonishing! The shamans themselves deeply feel their lineage, their ancestors, and descendants, and are well acquainted with the history of their family and people.
Since I wanted to improve my state and my life, I first saw the heavy historical experiences of my ancestors that negatively affected me. I am originally from Russia, and during shamanic ceremonies, the dark sides of Russian history were revealed to me. There is a lot of pain, tragedy, sorrow, injustice, violence, and crimes in this history. These include:
- The era of serfdom and extreme social inequality, where some people had all rights and privileges while others were slaves;
- Tyranny, terror, and repression by the authorities against the population, executions, and labor camps;
- The dispossession of the kulaks, where people’s property was confiscated;
- Forced resettlement of peoples and involuntary immigration;
- Revolutions and civil wars;
- The First and Second World Wars, with many millions of casualties.
These events are associated with immense violence, hunger, poverty, the need to survive in extremely harsh conditions, and countless ruined lives. Of course, all these historical events have their deep-seated causes rooted in human errors and weaknesses. I had interesting visions of how seemingly small and insignificant events give rise to major conflicts and wars.
Before the ceremonies and this kind of contact with the life experiences, pain, and suffering of the people affected by these events, I could not have imagined how deeply it impacted many people and their families, the nation, and humanity as a whole. The immense influence it has had and continues to have on the society where I was born and grew up, and how it shaped the internal self-perception of people and their way of life for many generations.
The heaviness, pain, fears, and humiliations from those events sit very deep within people. Many of our problems and hereditary diseases trace back to these roots; there lie the origins of many of our society’s ills. I am convinced that the current complex situation in Russia and the bleak mental state of the people living there are direct consequences of those events. Therefore, it is important for people to know and remember their true history, acknowledge it, understand the mistakes that led to the dark events of the past, and prevent them from recurring. Otherwise, history tends to repeat itself until the lesson is learned.
Of course, the events I mentioned involved various peoples, both large and small. In general, the entire history of humanity is filled with wars and dark moments; many nations have gone through this in the past or are going through it now. However, I thought it was a good idea to write about these processes using the Russian people as an example because I am part of this people, and I deeply feel everything I write about. In shamanic ceremonies with Ayahuasca, Peyote, and mushrooms, one can see and understand this historical experience, comprehend its causes, reconsider it, and correct the negative consequences. One can become free from the burden of the past, remove fears and pain, and choose a better life path. As one shaman in Mexico said during a large night ceremony with the Peyote cactus, through this work, we heal our entire Lineage. All changes that alter the world begin with ourselves.
A small but important aside. I wrote this article before February 24, 2022, the day when the Russian army, under Putin’s orders, invaded Ukraine. This war is a crime against the Ukrainian, Russian, Belarusian, and many other peoples; it is a crime against humanity, a great tragedy for millions (millions…!) of people. Unfortunately, history does indeed repeat itself, and its unlearned lessons make themselves felt. I saw the war in ceremonies long before it began, but I hoped that in reality, it wouldn’t come to such horror. Every time I returned to Russia after a cycle of ceremonies, I began to feel the heaviness of being there, the grim and aggressive atmosphere around me. I aspired to move to another country, and I am very glad that I managed to do so before the war. I may write more about this separately. I have much to say on what is happening in Russia… I left the country, but some bright part of my people, my country—the real, free, and just part—is always with me.
And I am confident that the Ukrainian people will defend their freedom and independence, and I hope this will lead to significant changes in Russia. But this war will have many grim consequences for a long time. Violence begets violence… I express my sincere support to all those who have faced problems and losses due to all this madness!
Of course, the dark and grim past is only one aspect of the human experience. There are many others. In shamanic ceremonies, I was shown a vast amount of bright and positive experiences, the personal strength of the people who lived before us. Throughout all times, there have been people striving for something better, for knowledge and growth, helping others, and manifesting the brightest and best human qualities, overcoming their weaknesses and correcting mistakes. Despite all trials and wars, our ancestors survived, reproduced, and gave us our lives. From them, we inherit their wisdom and strength, their skills and talents. And it seems to me that even my interest in shamanism has its roots in the past. I saw people in my lineage who were involved in healing and shamanism. Of course, there is no way to verify the accuracy of these visions, as these are events from the distant past. But I believe it was so.
And on a broader scale, our history largely defines our lives. The human world in which we live was created by those who came before us and continues to be shaped by us…
Looking to the Future: The Path and Choice of Humanity. The Birth and Death of Civilizations. Life on Other Planets.
In ceremonies, you can work not only with the past and present but also with the future. You can see possible scenarios and trends, predict events, and choose the best path for yourself. Of course, this can and should be done even without ceremonies, but in shamanic trance, the ability to do this is significantly enhanced, allowing you to see far ahead. This helped me find new opportunities and make some important decisions, including business decisions and immigration to another country. Some of my visions came true with surprising accuracy, but many did not.
When considering the future, I believe it is impossible to predict it with certainty. All living beings possess free will, and no one knows what choices will be made or what consequences they will bring. What I find fascinating about ceremonies is that you can explore questions ranging from relatively small-scale issues affecting the life of an individual to global questions about humanity, the world, and the universe. Continuing from the topic of humanity’s past, I want to say a few words about its future.
I saw that humanity is on a destructive path. I saw many serious mistakes and negative trends. From what comes to mind now: there is the destructive attitude toward nature and catastrophic pollution of the planet; the concentration of too much power in the hands of a few, abuse of power, and the incitement of wars; propaganda and societal manipulation on one hand, and ignorance, disunity, and indifference on the other; restrictions on the rights and freedoms of people in various countries, limitations on freedom of speech; the unreasonable use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence. These and many other factors collectively slow down the development of humanity and, in the long run, could lead to irreparable consequences—major wars and global ecological catastrophes, a significant decline in the quality and standard of living, human degradation, and ultimately, the downfall of humanity. To the extent that humanity could perish if it does not mature in time and become more reasonable and conscious.
However, I maintain faith in humanity. One can view its path as a journey of growth and evolution, where humanity learns from its mistakes, goes through darkness on its way to the light, and arrives at the creation of a prosperous, healthy, rational, and free society that lives in harmony with itself and nature… And there are signs that people are evolving, becoming more humane and reasonable.
At the same time, I believe that our human civilization is probably not the first on Earth. Perhaps even more advanced civilizations existed here, as suggested by ancient structures preserved in some places on our planet. It is interesting to consider what their path was like and what happened to them.
Each civilization (just like every person, family, nation, country, and even each planet, star, star system, galaxy, and so on) has its life cycle: it is born and dies, experiencing periods of rise and decline. Just as the birth and death of a person, the birth and death of a civilization is a natural process. The future path of our particular human civilization and how long it will last depends on the choices of every individual. After all, the collective choice of all people determines the choice of humanity as a whole. Each person contributes to the development or destruction of this world, bearing their share of responsibility for what happens on our planet. People are given the freedom to choose, and each person makes their contribution to this world, to our shared future.
Going beyond our planet, I have had interesting visions that life in the universe manifests in an infinite variety of forms and developmental paths of living beings. After ceremonies, I sometimes gazed at the stars in the sky and felt that there is life out there. In this state, it is a beautiful and mystical experience, feeling the incredibly vast world that surrounds us. Even our entire planet Earth, which is our home and seems so large to us, is just a drop in the ocean of the cosmos. The star systems are so far apart to ensure the possibility of free development of life in different worlds.
Of course, currently, there is no way to practically verify the existence of extraterrestrial life, although people are making attempts. They will likely only find out when they build interstellar spacecraft and embark on long journeys. I hope that humanity will choose the path of developing constructive technologies and use them wisely. Because overall, with technological progress, humanity, unfortunately, gains more opportunities to destroy itself. The most obvious example is nuclear war, due to too much power being in the wrong hands. Or the continuation of experiments in creating modified viruses, the consequences of which humanity recently felt.
The Spiritual Reality of Our World and Deep Connection with Nature. Tatewari, Grandfather Fire.
I want to share some of my experiences communicating with the spiritual world and spirits and how I personally perceive and understand them.
Of course, there is a materialistic viewpoint that denies the existence of spirits and higher powers altogether. On the other hand, people have always had various beliefs in supernatural forces, many of which are simply figments of imagination or ways to explain the complex nature of the world. Yet, I have felt and deeply connected with the spiritual forces that truly exist in our world. These are the forces of Nature, from which we all originate. Nature itself is intelligent. In special states of consciousness (deep meditation or shamanic trance), we can communicate with it.
Ancient shamanism, at its core, is the ability to interact with the spiritual essence of our world, to establish a deep connection with Nature and its pure spirits. True shamans know how to communicate with them, how to invite them to join the shamanic work. These intelligent forces can offer so much to a person, from healing diseases to making people happier and freer, and providing clear answers to the most complex questions. After all, Nature, of which humans are inherently a small part, is far wiser than people. It can teach and heal us. In shamanic trance, I often feel a sense of complete unity with the surrounding nature and a strong sense of support, love, care, strength, and wisdom from it.
At first, it even frightened me when I drank Ayahuasca and encountered spirits, realizing that I could communicate with them fully. I was used to the idea that conversations were only possible with other people. But here, I was interacting with a living, intelligent force that knew everything about me—my entire life story, why I had come to it. This intelligent force answered all my questions in a simple and comprehensible way, including those I had pondered for my entire conscious life.
Thus, the spiritual reality of our world was revealed to me, astonishingly beautiful and alive. I perceive these forces as a kind of collective consciousness, an ancient intelligence, but at the same time, I also see and feel its various components:
- Firstly, these are the spirits of plants. Plants are alive and have their own consciousness (I was very surprised when I realized this). In the shamanic tradition, they are called teacher plants because they can teach. Each species has its own spirit, carrying its own knowledge and energy. This is how shamans learned how to heal with these plants and how to work with them correctly—because the plants themselves can show it. When I went through shamanic diets with plants, I clearly saw what each one did and received specific, detailed recommendations on how to work with them.
- Secondly, there are the spirits of animals that appear in shamanic trance. In Ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru, I see many snakes, and the Ayahuasca vine itself often appears as a snake. In the Mexican ceremonies with Peyote, the spirit of the Deer frequently appears. I often see the Eagle and the Jaguar and feel my connection with them. I see other animals less frequently. Each of them carries its own strength and energy, which can be deeply felt and understood. You can connect with and identify with this strength. I have been the Eagle, soaring over the jungle and seeing everything from a great height. I have been the Jaguar, a powerful and swift hunter roaming the jungle. It seems that such experiences are linked to the beliefs of different peoples in totem animals and myths about the ability of humans to transform into various creatures. This transformation is possible, but not physically—rather, on the level of consciousness. This was also an extraordinary experience for me when I felt what it was like to be an animal.
- Thirdly, not only plants and animals but also natural phenomena and everything that surrounds us have their own spiritual essence. I believe it is possible to communicate with the spirits of rivers and lakes, seas and oceans, mountains and forests. And of course, with the spirit of the Earth itself, which gives us life and is perceived in shamanic trance as a living being with its own consciousness.
- Fourthly, there are spirits beyond our earthly world. I have encountered powerful cosmic forces and seen how they are connected to our planet. However, I haven’t yet found a way to give a coherent description of these visions. I saw how these forces create worlds and fill them with life… I also see that it is possible to communicate even with stars because our consciousness is essentially boundless.
Of course, during shamanic ceremonies, people see many different visual images. These can be anything—plants, people, animals, monsters, aliens, angels, and demons. But this does not mean that everything seen exists in reality. Most often, these images come from a person’s inner world, from their memories, unconscious, or imagination. Sometimes, it may be a kind of visual language used to show or tell the person something important for them. At the same time, I feel a real connection with intelligent forces that have their own consciousness. This is very different from just seeing images, but I have yet to find the words to convey this difference. With practice comes the ability to navigate the spiritual world, understanding what you are seeing and what is happening.
I want to specifically mention the spirit of Fire 🔥. Meeting the spirit of Fire was one of the most valuable and powerful experiences for me. I encountered Fire in Peyote ceremonies in Mexico, which are held with a bonfire. Fire possesses great strength and wisdom; it transforms all the negativity within us and teaches us not to fear or judge. Essentially, Fire is sacred to humans, as they have been connected with Fire since ancient times. Fire helped people survive the cold and protect themselves from wild animals, cook food, create tools, and make pottery. Fire illuminated the path for humans in the darkness of this world, helping them not to lose their way.
The Huichol people call him Grandfather Tatewari. He showed me many things about humanity and its evolutionary journey.
In my daily life, I sometimes meditate with Fire. I often feel its strength, its support. There have been times when I was in a difficult situation and received very clear answers from Fire. They weren’t always what I wanted to hear, but they were truthful… I believe that anyone can try such a meditation if they wish. It’s enough to simply light a fire and mentally reach out to it, ask for help, intend to receive that help, and connect with that force. Relax and calmly observe the thoughts and images that come to mind, watch yourself and see what happens.
Overall, shamanic ceremonies with Ayahuasca, Peyote, and mushrooms reveal to people their true natural and spiritual essence, showing their connection to the Earth and nature. Modern people have forgotten their roots, forgotten who they really are. It is crucial for them to learn to value Nature, to protect and defend it. To learn to value and respect Life, plants and animals, rivers and seas, forests and jungles. To preserve this for future generations… While there is still a chance to do so… While there is still a chance.
Immortality and Higher States of Consciousness. On Life After Death and the Grand Game We All Play.
Continuing the discussion on the spiritual nature of our world, I want to write about human consciousness. Perhaps what I am about to share here became the most significant revelation for me during shamanic ceremonies.
I think everyone has pondered whether there is life after death. Where will they go, and what will happen to them? Or will there be nothing at all? I first asked myself this question as a child after the death of a relative. It seemed strange and incomprehensible to me that I exist, live, and then suddenly I will die and cease to exist. What is the point of all this? And shamanic ceremonies showed me how it is all arranged.
In shamanic trance, I experienced death and saw what follows. These experiences were very frightening at times (especially at the beginning), as I would vividly die and believe I was dead, completely separating from my body and the personality I was familiar with. There were also very calm and peaceful moments when I would look at my body, my hands, my legs, and understand that all of this is temporarily mine. In time, this body will die, and eventually, only bones will remain, and then nothing at all. And while this is inevitable and how this world works, I didn’t see anything tragic or dramatic in it. «I» felt clearly, «I» would continue to exist; my consciousness would not die, and all living beings are part of the infinite flow of life. Death is part of the life process, one of the transformations our consciousness undergoes in its exploration of the universe. «I» in quotes, because in deep shamanic trance, the perception of self… is different.
I see our consciousness (which one could call the spirit or soul) as light, self-aware energy, the force that makes humans and other beings alive. Our human body and brain are merely conduits for this force in the physical world. When a person’s body dies, consciousness separates and transitions to another level of existence. By its nature, it is immortal; it cannot die. But at the same time, this consciousness does not belong to our human personality. It is part of a universal cosmic consciousness, and like drops in the ocean, human souls are part of this vast ocean. The most powerful experiences for me were the moments of merging into this ocean of life, uniting with this universal cosmic consciousness.
I experienced these states in various forms, but all of them were majestic and beautiful to me. It is an indescribable sensation of complete freedom and pure consciousness. I felt a direct connection to the source of life, the place where life originated and from which it came, and the waves of life-giving and healing energy emanating from there. Human life is seen from a very high vantage point, merely a small fragment in this vast world and flow of life. The lives of different people, both living and departed, and the whole of human history are understood and perceived. One can see the energy that makes up our world and how our intentions create reality. Life is perceived as a grand game, a virtual reality into which our consciousness dives for a short time to gain experience. A deep understanding of the meaning of life, its infinity, and what the universe is and how it is arranged opens up.
There were moments when I felt so good and calm in these states, feeling truly at home there, that I didn’t want to return to my physical body and this reality. But I would remember my loved ones, my goals and responsibilities in this world, how much I had yet to do, and the many opportunities this world offers. So, I returned, understanding that human life is finite and truly passes quickly, and when my body dies, I will return to where I came from. Meanwhile, I will live, move forward, overcome all difficulties, improve myself and my life, help people, and enjoy the beauty of this world.
However, I cannot say that I fully understand the journey of human consciousness after physical death. One could view it from the perspective that our familiar human personality does indeed die. The memory of it remains recorded in the memory of the Universe, but consciousness undergoes significant transformations. The person confronts their inner content, all their human experiences, and reviews their life path. Whether this process is peaceful and light or painful and heavy depends on who the person was, how they lived, the choices they made, and the actions they took. The concept of heaven and hell is a simplified religious representation of this. People who caused pain and suffering to others will inevitably answer for their actions, if not in life, then after death. Karma exists, and ultimately, everything comes into balance, though sometimes this requires a lot of time…
I have not yet been able to grasp and describe the further path of consciousness. It remains a great mystery to me which part of my human experience I will take with me. And overall, whether I will take anything at all or whether death will mean complete merging with eternity. After all, by our very nature, we are all parts of a single whole. At the same time, I understand that it is important for me to be aware of my individuality. I do not yet know how it will be, but I am confident that I will solve this mystery when the time comes. Death is always beside us, and we will all meet it. But there is nothing to fear. While we are alive, there is so much we can do… And sometimes it helps to remember that our time is limited, so as not to waste it.
This description is my personal perception of life and death. In general, the shamanic visions I described are how I see these things now. Another person might perceive these things differently through their own experiences and describe them in another way. A significant value of shamanic ceremonies lies in the state of direct perception of reality that opens at certain stages of shamanic trance, where one sees and understands the world as it truly is. But any subsequent description through thoughts and words is an interpretation. I believe it cannot be entirely accurate, as the human brain describes reality using familiar images and tends to fill in the gaps of what it doesn’t fully know. Therefore, personal experience of understanding is so valuable and important. Each person’s experience in a shamanic ceremony is unique and unparalleled.
Postscript. I Believe It Is Important to Preserve This Priceless Knowledge.
I would like to talk about many other things, but I am not yet sure how to describe them. Besides, the text has already turned out to be much longer than I originally intended. I wonder if anyone read it in full? You can leave your comment (form will be below); I wrote about this for the first time, and I am interested in feedback. 🙂
In conclusion, after getting closely acquainted with shamanism, I could no longer live as I did before. I began to change many aspects of my life, and some things changed on their own in a seemingly magical way. However, much of what is seen is forgotten in ordinary states, and it requires effort to apply these insights in practice. My notes, which I take at each ceremony, help me with this. I strive to follow the path I chose for myself in my shamanic journeys. But I am far from being able to fully bring everything into reality. There is always something to work on and areas to improve, to learn from, as life continues to offer new stories and challenges, new mistakes occur, and old ones repeat. The process of understanding and gaining life experience is endless; it never ends and has no final point. I am deeply grateful to the Shamans for the new world they showed me ✨.
I see authentic shamanism as an incredible value for the human world, sadly almost forgotten and lost by humanity. True shamanic traditions are dying, their living bearers are very few, and this knowledge will be lost when the last authentic masters—Peruvian shamans of Ayahuasca, Mexican shamans of Peyote and mushrooms—are gone.
My path, as I see it, is to try to preserve a part of this priceless knowledge. I intend to continue studying shamanism seriously. I do not know how far I can go; it’s all very challenging… But I want these insights and traditions to survive in the human world, to continue to live on, and to be passed down further.
